Hey Bonners!
Just wanted to let you know that the purpose of this page is to start up some dialogue about the books and other forms of literature that we come across that deals with our passion. We have recently learned that networking and sharing our resources is one of the only ways that we as Bonners can work together. We look forward to hearing from all of you guys (and girls too)!
Coordinators: Akua Addae & Anna Schumacher
Books:
- Crash Course
- Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking
- Gladwell examines the human power of 'rapid cognition' - those judgments made after initial impressions, in the blink of an eye. He suggests that there may be more value to these quick, two-second assessments than our culture has been willing to accept. He makes the provocative claim that if we tapped into and honed this skill then we would all become better decision makers and the result would be a "different and better world."
- The Davidson College Bonner Scholars were each asked to make a book recommendation to their fellow Bonners. Although anyone is more than welcome to the full list, a few of the recommendations are below:
- Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder
- The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
- The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
- A Hope in the Unseen by Ron Suskind
- Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol
- Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
- In the Time of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
- White Teeth by Zadie Smith
- When a Crocodile Eats the Sun: A Memoir of Africa by Peter Goodwin
- The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay
- Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Friere
