Eligibility

AmeriCorps is funded through the U.S. Government, and there are strict regulations regarding the provision of proof of U.S. citizenship and/or other eligibility documentation prior to enrollment. The National Bonner AmeriCorps program is held accountable by the Corporation for National and Community Service to comply with federal government requirements and maintain an AmeriCorps Member file for each enrollee containing proof of an individual's eligibility to be enrolled in the program.

To be eligible to enroll in AmeriCorps, a potential Members must be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. National or a Lawful Permanent Resident at the time of application for enrollment and also be at least 17 years old (with written parental consent), or he or she must have attained the age of 18 before the desired official start date for their first AmeriCorps term.

All individuals must also possess either a high school diploma or a GED or agree to obtain one before the required exit date of their AmeriCorps term of service. The GED requirement can be waived based on the submission of an Individual Educational Assessment (IEP) indicating that the individual is not capable of obtaining a high school diploma or its equivalent. Individuals who are registered sex offenders or who have been convicted of murder are not eligible to serve in AmeriCorps.

Schools that submit enrollments for the Bonner AmeriCorps Program must retain copies of each potential Member's required eligibility documents together with a copy of each completed Enrollment Workbook at their campus. The original of each completed AmeriCorps Enrollment Workbook is kept at the Bonner Foundation.

According to current government regulations, individuals may not receive more than the equivalent two Full-Time Education Awards, limited to serving four terms, through programs overseen by the Corporation for National & Community Service.
