1)  First-Year Class: Bonner Love 101 Oberlin College

The Case:  Oberlin College's first year Bonner students are required to a semester-long seminar class to assist in their transition to college and the Bonner Scholars Program.  The course was approved to be a one-credit course.

The Solution:  Bonner Love 101 orients first-year Bonners to the College, the surrounding community and the Bonner Scholars Program.  The course also provides an opportunity to explore issues relevant to new students in the college environment while highlighting civil responsibility.

The Process:  Bonner Love 101 is offered at a time that does not conflict with other classes for first year students, including athletes.  The course addresses specific topics for discussion, values clarification, time and financial management, social class in American academic resources, working with the community and the service needs of the area county.  Students have required reading, assignments and attendance is also required.  at the end of the year students complete a journal entry for reflection, as well as complete a course evaluation

2)  Selection Process West Virginia Wesleyan College

The Case: Previously, the selection committee had no oppurtunity to meet and interact with the applications prior to selection.  Being frustrated, the committee recognized that some applicants did have the appropriate workable skills to be part of the program.

The Solution:  The Bonner Scholars selection committee developed a required day, Bonner Preview Day, for candidates in an effort to interact more personally and as a way to observe candidates in real work situations.

The Process:  Applications are submitted in mid-February of the spring semester prior to the beginning of the proceeding school year.  The committee reviews applications and selects candidates qualifying for Bonner Preview Day held on a Saturday in late March/early April.  The day consist of several interviews by selection committee members, service activities, a final review and reflection.  The new Bonner scholars' recommendations are made immediately following the weekend by college admissions staff and the Bonner director.
