The Harward Center for Community Partnerships supports:
- the college's Academic Community-Based Learning Program;
- Volunteerism and Student Leadership Development Program (including the Student Volunteer Fellows Program);
- the Community-Based Research Fellows Program (funded through Learn and Serve, via the National CBR Network);
- Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area;
- Community Work-Study programming;
- a range of fellowships and grant funds for students over the summer and during the academic year;
- a host of grant programs for faculty and staff;
- a student philanthropy fund for community partner agencies (the Carignan Fund)
Over half of Bates students engage in academic community-based learning or research during their career; two-thirds of Bates students engage in other community-based work.
What did we do in 2008-09?
We have spent the past year planning and piloting our Bonner Leaders Program, Our planning/pilot group is a mix of faculty, staff and students, all bringing different and specific interests, experience, and expertise. We have a developmental psychology professor (who pioneered Action Research in the 1980's and has been an active teacher, partner, and practitioner since); a clinical psychology professor who is also currently undertaking research on student engagement for the AACU's Bringing Theory to Practice project; the Associate Director of the Harward Center; the Harward Center's Assistant Director for Volunteerism and Student Leadership Development; the Harward Center's Service-Learning Coordinator; the Associate Dean for Student Transitions/Admissions Director for Multicultural Recruitment; eight students from diverse years, genders, and backgrounds.
We met regularly, developing ideas, plans, and resources with the use of a dedicated wiki. Achievements include:
Development and implementation of recruitment model:
- the creation of a recruitment plan (successfully implemented, bringing in seven new recruits (five of them work-study eligible) with a diversity of backgrounds and interests);
Planning of cornerstone activities:
- planning of and relationship-building for an April service trip to work with an ongoing project raising college aspirations and access for Wabenaki youth in northern Maine;
- dialogue with Amherst to develop plans for regular fall service exchange;
- special collaborative project by current first-year Bonners (with participation from more senior Bonners) to plan fall 2009 orientation for all Bonners;
- attendance of two Bonners at Bonner Congress in the Fall, two Bonners at Bentley’s national Students as Colleagues Conference, and one Bonner at the Summer Leadership Institute in Florida;
- funding of one current Bonner in a CWS summer of full-time work with a non-profit doing social justice work in her home community;
Creation of program support and materials:
- construction and dissemination of a program brochure;
- student writing, casting, and filming a video that introduces our Bonner Leader Program (in editing and production over the summer);
- creation, funding, and successful recruitment of a VISTA dedicated to our Bonner Leader Program;
- work with students to create campus issue profiles (see posted samples in our wiki profile) and plan to use the development of such issue profiles as a tool for team-building across modes of service;
- an ongoing narrative inquiry research project with CBR Fellows and Student Volunteer Fellows (groups that overlap significantly with Bonner and in which Bonners are encouraged to serve) to study their understandings of "service"; the work they have done at Bates in community; the ways they understand that work's impact on themselves and their communities; their plans for the future and how their experiences in community helped shape those plans;
- staff training on BWBRS and planned implementation of it this summer (we intend to use it for Bonners, other Ed Award students, and Student Volunteer Fellows);
Creation of developmental model and co-curriculum:
- development of a Bonner curriculum and clear requirements for students;
- study of Bonner student development models and creation, by engaged faculty in particular, of a complementary student development model that more closely reflects the Bates experience: Explore, Commit, Explore, Commit;
- creation, again with faculty support in particular, of an evaluation/assessment/reflection system and cycle to understand the impacts of the program on Bonner Leaders;
- development of a Bates-Bonner Student Leadership training plan, exploration of other existing leadership training across campus (including collaboration with Dean of Students) and beginnings of a manual;
- running a two-part student development workshop series on non-profit finances and grantwriting basics; student attendees administered the Carignan Fund, making grants to community partner organizations;
- development of a range of student "Bonner activity" options, including: community-based learning; community-based research; TA-ing CBL or CBR courses; volunteerism; volunteer leadership; student philanthropy; "civic storytelling" and "global storytelling."
