CAMPUS AT A GLANCE

Augsburg is a private Liberal Arts College with undergraduate and graduate programs located in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Augsburg College was founded in 1869 by Norwegian Lutherans and became the first seminary they established in the United States. The founders believed that an Augsburg education should be preparation for service in community and church and would be future leaders in service.

Augsburg is the only college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America located in Minneapolis and we consider this city our metropolitan classroom. Our mission is to nurture future leaders in service to the world by providing high quality educational opportunities, which are based in the liberal arts and shaped by the faith and values of the Christian church, by the context of a vital metropolitan setting, and by an intentionally diverse campus community.

KEY FACTS

Location: About 5 minutes south of Downtown Minneapolis, MN

Enrollment: 3,785 students from 40 countries. Our diverse community includes 21.7% students of color, 1% international students and 39% of our students are lutherans. We also have diveristy in the origins of our students who come from 42 U.S States and 40 different Countries.

Another interesting tidbit:

Augsburg Auggies come from all over the country and the world to live and learn in the city. Augsburg has a lively assortment of cultures, races, identities, religions, and ways of thinking. Though we are from different backgrounds and traditions, our experiences are shaped by our faith and values. We explore our own beliefs while learning about the faith traditions of others.

MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

Augsburg College benefits from its position in the middle of one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Minneapolis. The Cedar-Riverside neighborhood is comprised of the largest Somali community in Minnesota, a large student population, many different businesses and two major institutions: the University of Minnesota and the Fairview Hospital.

Augsburg reaches out to many of the neighborhoods that surround it. Although many of our partners are across the street and down the block, we also work in the Seward neighborhood, and expand further along Franklin Avenue to the Phillips neighborhood.

The Augsburg Bonner Community Leaders Program is viewed on campus as a successful model to build on the college’s culture of community and civic engagement and bring together existing community service programs to take us to the next level of deepening knowledge, reflection, and authenticity of civic engagement in the community.

Highlights of the 2008 Augsburg Bonner Leaders Program:

We are very proud of the inaugural group of students who were recruited for the Bonner Leaders Program in the fall of 2008!!!  The seventeen students selected for the program were largely first-years, with diverse ethnic and geographical backgrounds, and unique experience with community-leadership roles and have established a solid foundation as student leaders on and off campus. The students did an excellent job at making the Bonner Leaders program an exciting new addition to campus life. Here are some highlights of a great first year as Bonner Leaders:

  • A First-year service trip to New Orleans in partnership with Campus Ministry- the Bonners commitment to reflection, meaningful service, and creating connections between all students stood out!
  • A benefit concert organized by three of our first years to help a childrens organization in Africa- these new to campus students demonstrated their true leadership abilities! Way to go Jasmine Zand, Alix Young, and Katia Iverson!
  • An MLK Service Day spent in a homeless shelter.
  • Participation in the Bonner Video Project. Cheers to Mallory Carstens and Kate Lewis who earned Augsburg the Service Program Profile Video star award at the Summer Leadership Institute Video showcase! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ORSDadWPLk
  • A deep connection to the Campus Kitchen and Community Garden on campus was forged through the Bonner Program.
  • Trainings, reflections, and retreats that introduced students to the city, to community partners and to their own great strengths.
  • Bonner students got directly involved in the leadership and growth of an ailing student organization, the LINK. The LINK, focusing on connecting campus to the surrounding community, has been reinvigorated through the participation of Bonner students and their dedication to authentic work with diverse groups off-campus.

2009 Augsburg Leaders Program will add 15 more students to the returning 17 students. This group will continue to spread their work around civic engagement through the campus culture at Augsburg as well as to link their learning to many of the academic courses on campus. Go Bonner!
