MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

Amherst College Leaders serve as liaisons and student leaders to the student groups affiliated with Amherst College as primary commnity partners.  In addition to responsibility for all aspects of operations of these student community service programs, Leaders also share responsibility for ongoing efforts to strengthen the culture of community engagement at Amherst College.

The program has come a long way from its origins. In 2005, the Partnership Leader program employed student leaders to work with community partnership organizations, but the organizations were fewer and leaders met with each other infrequently, still working out the details of how to best run their programs. In 2006, the re-named and expanded Bonner Leader program worked off of the baseline set by the Partnership Leaders as well as the guidelines set by the multi-campus student leader Bonner Foundation program. They added collaborative projects, self-evaluation, and group initiatives to their agenda. In Fall of 2007, the program took on 8 new leaders  as part of the new CCE. Leaders continue to run their partnerships, plan events for students and tutors, and serve on committees that address a variety of campus issues and program needs. As part of a new program, Leaders are also involved in further shaping and defining their work to best suit the needs of their organizations and the Amherst student body.

Program Goals:

  1. To enhance student understanding of rights, privileges and duties of citizenship in a diverse democracy.
  2. To gain the skills necessary to provide effective leadership.
  3. To prepare an active team of student leaders to strengthen the campus culture of community engagement.
  4. To facilitate student recognition of the connection between community work and academics.

We will be sending out a Summer and Fall request as well, so this is only for this semester.
