Purpose

The purpose of having an Alumni Network is so that we can create a professional network among Bonner Alumni and to utilize their resources to connect with current Bonner students through professional development, service and civic engagement.

Survey Analysis

Earlier this year we conducted a survey that went out to Alumni asking them for various information concerning there whereabouts and if they would like to be connected in a Bonner Alumni Network.  296 Alumni from around the country filled out the survey. (If you are an alumni and would like to complete the survey use this link http://surveycentral.uc.iupui.edu/bonneralumni.aspx. (The password for the opening screen is “bonner”).

Alumni represented the following states:

NC: 29  DC:  10  FL:   MN:
NJ: 25  KY:  9  CO:   MS:
GA: 21  IL:  8  OR:  3  NH:  1
TN: 18  OH:  8  WI:   AL:  1
PA: 17  SC:  6  MO:  3  AZ:  1
NY: 14  WA:  6  IA:
CA: 13    ME:  2
WV: 12  MA:  6  MI:  2
IN: 11 TX:  5 NM:  2
MD: 11 LA:  5 AR:  2

The survey showed that most alumni were interested in participating in service projects (82.1%), mentoring initiatives (73.8%) and with recruitment of future Bonners (52.1%).

2010-11 Plans - Draft

As a result, we believe we will concentrate on three initiatives in the next year (2010-2011).

  1. Immediate Communications strategy

  2. Connecting through Community Service

  3. Career Networking/Mentorship Program

We are looking for alumni who want to take a leadership and coordinate in this endeavor.  To discuss, call Michael Richardson at the Bonner Foundation (609) 924-6663.

Immediate Communication Strategy

Through the survey we were able to navigate our communication through 3 venues:

1)  Facebook

We would like to use Facebook as a means of communicating information, resources, events, etc to Alumni.

The survey showed that majority of Alumni would like to stay connected by using Facebook (84%) and email listserv (71.5%).

Some of the next steps we are looking to move forward with are:

  • We want to add/invite Alumni to the Facebook Alumni group page.
  • We are looking to begin to use Facebook (possibly other websites) as a tool for networking.
  • Looking for input and researching how to best utilize Facebook.

2) Alumni Email Listserv

The Alumni Email Listerv would be our primary means of communication between the Bonner Foundation and alumni network. Survey showed that second to Facebook, an Email Listerv is how Alumni would like to stay connected.  We think that this would be the most efficient way to disseminate information to and from the foundation.

We would like to use the email listserv for the following purposes:

  • Send out newsletters to the alumni
  • Updates on upcoming events in the Bonner Network
  • Send out surveys to learn how to be more effective and to best include the Alumni.
  • Use email to help match up students to Alumni for mentor/career networking

3) Alumni Wiki Page

You are now on the Alumni Wiki page!!  This page will act as the alumni website.  This is where you are able to access information, resources and activities pertaining to Alumni.

 Alumni Wiki will include:

  • Local Chapters Section:  each school will have a Alumni chapter page where they will post their personal Bonner Alumni directory, events happening on campus and ways for alumni to participate in current Bonner initiatives.  Alumni service projects can be posted here.

  • Alumni directory by geographical location: a list of alumni listed by their current geographical status

  • Foundation event updates:  upcoming events (i.e., SLI, New Directors Meeting etc.)

  • Resource section:  how to stay connected to the network, how to start a local bonner chapter etc.

  • Volunteer Opportunities:  Summer of service opportunities for current students, International service positions, Internships by location

  • Career Opportunities: Job postings and/or fellowship opportunities by location

Connecting through Community Service

We want to get Alumni involved in some of the service work that our current students are doing as a way of networking and acknowledgment that service doesn't stop after college.  The survey showed that 81.8% of Alumni want to be involved in service activities with current Bonner students. The mission would be to connect Alumni with current students through service events and opportunities.

Possible Ideas:

  • Bonner Programs would invite alumni to service events.  We would like to follow up with a couple of schools to take on this initiative.
  • Local Alumni can host a service event and invite their local Bonner Programs.
  • We will post service opportunities on the alumni wiki so that they are open to the public.

Career Networking/ Mentorship

Providing support and mentoring to current Bonner students through Alumni connections and resources

Possible Ideas:

  • Have alumni profiles on  this wiki where current students can browse through and connect with those they prefer.
  • Use email listserve to connect with alumni and match up with students.
  • Launch Pilot Alumni chapters. We plan to start in New Jersey, North Carolina and Florida.
